St George v Newtown
Women’s Practice Match
A wet and windy morning at Olds Park greeted the St George and Newtown squads as they prepared for their “8 quarter” match.
The first 4 quarters saw the Dragons jump to a big lead. The Dragons intensity and attack on the ball was ferocious and saw them race out of the blocks early. Louise Grady presented well and kicked a few goals up front and she was ably helped by Ash Osborne and Kaylan Prestwidge – who finished with a goal of her own.
Rae Williams, Alex Diakos and Emma Ross starred in defence while Audrey Fonseca looked like a veteran footy player. This included a memorable piece of play where she unloaded a great handball (after an amazing effort to keep the ball in play) to Selena Kranitis who received a bone-crunching tackle. However, in typical Selena fashion, she jumped straight back up with barely a bruise.
A great performance in our first hit-out and all players should be proud of their efforts!
Final Score: Dragons 9.3.57 defeated Newtown 1.1.7
The second half involved a change in personnel but that did nothing to change the Dragons intensity. Although they were playing a team in a higher division, the Dragons did not let up and continued to be first to the ball.
Rhiannon Burns had a big day on the ball while Maddy Hatswell continued her great run of form. Jemma Gallehawk and Jess Bevan presented well and took some fantastic marks on long leads. Mia Gastelaars and Lili Braidner were also outstanding up forward.
In defence, Flick McArthur never lost a contest all match while Ali Simpson, Sarah Hay and Gemma Cooke were a brick wall, barely letting anything go past.
A low-scoring affair ended with the Dragons winning a close match.
Final Score: Dragons 0.10.10 defeated Newtown 1.2.8
Thank you to Brad Demeary and Peter Kranitis for umpiring, Tim Brooks and Aaron Fanous for doing the goals and Kaylee Magrath for being the runner for all 8 quarters.
Bring on round 1!
