Players Handbook 2011

Vale – Robert (Bobby) Brown

I was advised earlier today, by Warren Kelso of situations and sudden passing of Bobby Brown on Sunday 8 May 2011, at the young age of 60. Affectionately known as ‘Brownie’ by his colleagues from the 1970’s, Bob was a popular player with his St George team mates, during his short football career, with the Club. Current members and players would not have known Bob; however his son, Dustin, played with St George U18’s, during 2010 season.

Bob was a Miranda junior, then played Third Grade with St George, and was a member of the 1978 Reserve Grade Premiership side. During his career with St George, Bob also spent some time playing with Sandy Bay club in Tasmania.

For the past 12 months Bob battled Leukaemia; appeared to have won the battle, only to fall at the last hurdle. A gangrene infection went through his body claiming his life unexpectedly.

Like many colleagues I am in shock to learn of his passing as will be many former members of that 1978 Premiership side. Bob’s father, Fred, for many years, ran the beer canteen on match days at Olds Park.

To Bob’s family and friends; the wishes and prayers of all St George AFC colleagues are with you as you mourn the passing of a great colleague. Bob Brown; a real character!

Funeral Arrangements – 10-00am Thursday 12 May at Kingsway Community Church, Resolution Drive Taren Point.

Congratulations Blake Guthrie & Lloyd Perris

Two of St George’s rising stars, Blake Guthrie and Lloyd Perris, have been selected in the respective U/18 and U/16 state squads. Both display a work ethic that coaches and teammates love and thoroughly deserve their selections.

In 2010 Blake divided his time between St George First Grade and the Sydney Swans Reserve Grade sides whilst 2011 has seen Blake play regularly for the Swans Reserves. St George has high hopes his football will progress to even higher levels in the coming years. He plays this weekend against Vic Metro at Blacktown Olympic Park.
U18 Schedule – 13 May 2011
RAMS v Vic Metro – teamlist

As a 15 year old Lloyd Perris signed as the inaugural member of the Sydney Swans Academy in 2010 and played u/18 football with St George. In 2011 Lloyd  forced his way into the First Grade side and has remained a key contributor belying his young age. He was nominated for the Round 6 Rising Star and has now added State selection to his growing football resume.
Perris signs as inaugural Academy member.
U16 Schedule – 1 April 2011

AFL NSWACT U16 RAMS

St George wishes both players every success in their respective representative games.

VALE Syd Felstead

St George has much sadness reporting the passing of Syd Felstead at home in Vincentia on NSW South Coast, Saturday evening 4tt June 2011. Syd’s sudden cause of death is not known at this stage. It appears; mature age may have caught up with our great colleague.

Syd was always strongly supported by his wife, Betty [nee O’Reilly b.1924] whom he married during the war and had four children; Graham, Sandra, Robyn and David. Both boys played briefly at St George, where Betty was a pillar of strength, working in the canteen at Hurstville Oval, selling raffle tickets and organising social functions. They retired to live at Vincentia, where Betty passed away in May 2005.

Syd Felstead made a valuable contribution to successes enjoyed by a vast base of Australian Rules players, supporters. He established basis for present day operations for many persons who continue to participate, enjoy Australia Rules throughout Sydney and NSW. St George benefited from Syd’s earlier work; winning eleven, Third Grade Premierships between 1958 and 1980; with two runner ups and only three times did it not make the final four in that era.

Australian Rules is poorer upon the passing of Syd Felstead. Syd was a pioneer; St George has lost an icon!

AFL Pathways Policy

There is an amount of confusion and/or misunderstanding about Sydney AFL’s Pathway Policy. At St George we consider it to be only one factor in a player from a local junior club deciding whether he wants to join the Dragons as an Under 18 player.

All Under 16 players will be invited to train with the Dragons this pre-season either as a pre-cursor to playing Under 18’s with us or as some additional coaching/mentoring for their next season in the Under 16’s. St George welcomes all new players, particularly from the local junior ranks. Under 16s are always welcome to attend u/18r training throughout the year should they wish.

We will be in contact with your clubs about pre-season training and other initiatives to foster closer relationships between our juniors and your senior club.

St George Dragons AFC

Wilsen wins back to back B&Fs!

On Saturday night, 8 October at the St George Masos, one of the club’s major sponsors, over 120 supporters, football staff, volunteers and partners attended the St George AFC Presentation night for season 2011.

Those in attendance saw Steve ‘Willo’ Wilsen win his third Dwyer Medal for First Grade  Best & Fairest. Steve was a popular winner with the players and the crowd. He survived a late charge by Paul Sain who entertained those present with one of the great “runners-up” speeches.

Danny Dwyer was at the function to present the award named after him. Again to the delight of the crowd, Danny was inducted into the St George Hall of Fame being only the 17th player to be so recognised in the club’s 83 years existence. Danny has played over 100 senior games for the club, represented NSW and Sydney, captained first grade, coached first grade and held many committee positions.

The Felstead Medal presented to the best & fairest Under 18 player went to Sean Bowen whilst the Reserve Grade best and fairest  was presented to Luke Maunder.

Olds Park Resurfacing – first photos

Just prior to Christmas as part of the ongoing redevelopment of Olds Park new turf was laid across the entire oval. The warm wet summer has provided perfect conditions for the turf to bed down and once this is achieved new drainage will be put in. This is work is expected to be carried out in the coming weeks.

The surface is presently unrecognisable to past and present players accustomed to uneven bounces and rolled ankles.
